The V formation helps the geese save their energy by synchronizing their wingbeats to take advantage of the updrafts they create, which helps to reduce the effects of wind and allow them to cover more distance —in fact, in favourable winds, migrating geese may reach speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour, and travel up to 1,000 kilometres in a day.
