Despite its Victorian-era esthetic, steampunk’s airships—including blimps—are often modelled on rigid-frame designs inspired by 1920s Zeppelins.

While its many components are inspired by historical elements, this steampunk-styled visual story is more fantasy than fact—the design elements are creatively interpreted rather than historically precise.

Obverse pattern
Another key element of steampunk? Gears! These are represented on the reverse and on the obverse, where gear shapes form a fun industrial-themed pattern.
The reverse design by Canadian illustrator Joel Kimmel transports the viewer into a fictional steampunk metropolis built around a winding waterway. Overhead, a blimp drifts through steam-filled skies, while below, a submarine glides toward a dock jutting from the bustling boardwalk, where pedestrians take in the water-level view of the Victorian-inspired buildings accented with industrial elements. Further enhancing the steampunk vibe, gear motifs help frame the composition and form a laser-engraved field pattern on the obverse, which features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
The reverse also includes subtle literary nods—the tentacles surrounding the submarine and the spear-wielding diver pay tribute to Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” while on the far left, the alien machine is from H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds”—and a callback to the first coin in the series, as a familiar locomotive chugs along the bridge in the distance.
