Add another timepiece to your coin collection! Our new sundial coin crafted in 99.99% pure silver features a reverse design that celebrates exploration and the beauty of time measured in light. Classic Roman numerals mark the hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. along the perimeter, anchored by an acanthus-leaf flourish, while decorative botanical motifs form an inner ring around a stylized globe. At the centre of it all, a compass rose sits beneath the angled rhodium-plated gnomon that casts a shadow across its coin base, indicating local solar time when placed in direct sunlight and pointed in the direction of true north.

A sundial’s gnomon must be angled to match Earth’s axis, which is why sundials calibrated for mid-northern latitudes (like this coin) won’t read correctly near the equator or in the southern hemisphere. Also, the gnomon must point towards true north (the North Pole), not magnetic north.

This sundial coin’s reverse was designed by Canadian artist Jori van der Linde. Roman numerals indicating the hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. form an outer ring along the perimeter, anchored by an ornate acanthus-leaf flourish, while a repeating botanical motif surround a stylized globe. The celebration of exploration and discovery continues at the centre of the design, where a compass rose supports the rhodium-plated, brass gnomon that casts a shadow onto the engraved dial plate, indicating local solar time. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
