Fernlike stellar dendrites are the largest snow crystals—larger even than the stellar dendrites featured on the first two coins in this series—and may measure over five millimetres in diameter by the time each one reaches the ground.

The coin’s reverse features a magnified view of a fernlike stellar dendrite captured by Canadian photographer Don Komarechka and intricately reproduced by Royal Canadian Mint engravers. The brilliant relief re-creates its intricate form, its delicate subbranches (or arms) extending outwards and resembling the branches of a fern, while the green crystal at its centre evokes the majesty of the lush evergreens that add colour to a winter landscape. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Steven Rosati.
