Please note that there is a slight rip in the outer cardboard box
Exclusively available to Masters Club members, our Lost Designs from the Archives series brings to life some of the unused flora concepts submitted in a 1936 design competition for the Canadian coin series of 1937.
The second coin in this series presents another flora design from sculptor Emanuel Hahn (1881-1957). You’ve seen his art on the Voyageur and 1939 Royal Visit silver dollars, the caribou 25-cent piece and the Bluenose 10-cent coin, and his proposed trillium cent was featured on Coin #1 in the series. Coin #2 is a rare peek at what might have been if Hahn’s design had been chosen for another denomination: the five-cent coin. His hand-drawn sketch of a wheat-themed nickel has been pulled from the shadows of history and finally given a chance to shine on this 2 oz. 99.99% pure silver collectible, where the strong emphasis on symmetry offers further evidence of Hahn’s keen eye for balance and harmony.
Design
From the archives
From one of Canada’s most renowned sculptors, this coin’s reverse design was proposed by Emanuel Hahn—the artist behind the Voyageur dollar and more—but never selected to appear on a Canadian coin, until now.
A historical effigy
Further connecting the past and present, this coin’s obverse re-creates the effigy of King George V, as seen on coins issued in 1936, during the process to modernize Canada’s coins. The date “1936” also appears on the reverse.
