Piano virtuoso. Jazz legend. Composer, educator and advocate. Celebrate the extraordinary life, work and legacy of Canada’s Oscar Peterson (1925-2007) and his exceptional contributions to Canadian music and culture, as well as his reputation as one of the world’s most respected and influential jazz artists of all time. The 2022 Celebrating Oscar Peterson commemorative one-dollar coin is an expression of the pride Canadians feel for the legendary pianist, and in this keepsake card, you'll find two versions of the special-theme piece: a non-colour version, and one with Peterson's favourite colour, purple.
A master of his craft, Canada’s Oscar Peterson, CC, CQ, OOnt, was a piano virtuoso whose technical brilliance and melodic inventiveness inspired awe in his peers and listeners alike.
The 2022 Celebrating Oscar Peterson commemorative one-dollar coin pays tribute to the legendary pianist, one of the greatest the world has ever known. This coin’s reverse design is an expression of the pride Canadians feel for this homegrown talent who has influenced generations of artists in Canada and around the world, and whose love of music was evident in every performance.
Throughout his illustrious six-decade career, Oscar Peterson fronted his own groups, performed solo, accompanied nearly every jazz legend, and won countless awards and accolades. His command of the keyboard, and the powerful emotions conveyed through his music—including his civil rights anthem Hymn to Freedom, the notes and chord symbols of which are represented on the $1 coin—made him a globally admired artist. Yet, no matter how far he travelled, Oscar Peterson’s heart remained in Canada, where he is—and always will be—a national treasure.
Designed by Canadian artist Valentine De Landro, the reverse celebrates the life and legacy of Oscar Peterson (1925-2007), one of the greatest pianists of all time. It features a depiction of the musician seated at his piano, playing his powerful civil rights anthem Hymn to Freedom, while musical notes and chord symbols from that piece also appear in the design. On the $1 coin with selective colour, Peterson’s favourite colour (purple) conveys the joy and love of music that were evident every time he played. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
