2022 Canada 10-cent The Bigger Picture - Bluenose 5oz Fine Silver (No Tax)

A "new" view of Bluenose! This 5 oz. 99.99% pure silver coin features an engraved reproduction of the dime's iconic design, which has been incorporated into a larger scene. The combined art is a nod to our maritime history—it shifts the focus to Bluenose's legacy as a working fishing vessel, and it shines a silvery spotlight on the dorymen who were the backbone of the North Atlantic fishery.

This 5 oz. coin marks the start of a new series that zooms in on our circulation coin designs and zooms out to reveal a bigger story. Like a coin within a coin, the original concept has been incorporated into a larger scene that fills its 65.25 mm fine silver canvas. And all that extra space allows a new artist to expand the storytelling, through visual elements that add new dimension to a decades-old design.

This coin's reverse features Emanuel Hahn's 10-cent circulation coin design with a new, expanded scene by Canadian marine artist Yves Bérubé. On the Grand Banks, off the coast of Newfoundland, two fishermen toil at the oars of a wooden dory, while their bait attracts seabirds. Canada's most famous ship, Bluenose, can be seen in the distance, where the waves from the original coin design extend outward to form a unified horizon. The obverse features a maple leaf pattern and the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Dories are lightweight boats with flat bottoms and high sides. Inexpensively built, they were designed to withstand the rough waves of the North Atlantic, though dories tended to be more stable once they were loaded with a fresh catch.

The dory trawl method was used from the mid-19th century until the mid-20th century. Dories were loaded onto the decks of schooners bound for the Grand Banks, where they allowed fishermen to split up and cover more fishing ground (Bluenose carried eight dories). Each day (weather permitting), the dories were launched into the water; and several times a day, the fishermen (usually two to one dory) would collect the fish and re-bait the hooks on the long trawl lines that set out from the schooner in different directions. The dorymen returned to unload their catch, which was headed, cleaned and salted before being piled in the ship's hold.

Take a close look at the dory on your coin's reverse—notice the number at the rear of the hull? The number "4" doesn't hold any special significance on your coin, but it was common practice to number the dories and the larger pieces of equipment they carried; this made for easier tracking, and it helped the skipper ensure every dory crew had safely returned to the mother ship at the end of a long work day.

Along with Captain Angus Walters, Bluenose's crew typically consisted of 21 men: 16 dorymen, a "dressing crew" of four and a cook.
