Based on Bill Reid (Iljuwas)'s beautiful Xhuwaji, Haida Grizzly Bear from 1990, this $2 coin honours traditional Haida art. The design originated as a ceremonial drum created by Bill Reid in 1988, and in 1990 was refined as a serigraph print.

The round image of Xhuwaji symbolizes strength, and shows the grizzly bear in the traditional Haida colours of red and black. The bear's large flaring nostrils demonstrate it's fierceness and the tongue symbolizes the oral traditions of the Haida people.
