Unlike the royal brooches highlighted on previous Crown Jewels coins, the Baring Ruby Necklace was not a gift, but a personal acquisition: it was bought at auction in 1964. It became one of Queen Elizabeth II’s most prominent ruby jewels, often worn for major occasions, including the 1977 opening of Canada’s Parliament in Ottawa as part of her Silver Jubilee royal tour.

Designed by artist Anna Bucciarelli, the coin’s reverse features an artistic interpretation of the Baring Ruby Necklace, acquired by Queen Elizabeth II in 1964 and frequently worn throughout her reign. Genuine rubies and diamonds—a total of 120 round brilliant cut diamonds (0.50 total carat weight) and 22 round and oval cut rubies, all set in 14-karat yellow gold mounts—are arranged across the design, where clusters along the outer edge echo the necklace’s neckline, while the three-pendant centrepiece takes pride of place amid scrollwork incorporating the maple leaf and Tudor rose.
