1858 Canada 20-cents ICCS Certified AU-50
The 20-cent coin was struck by the Royal Mint in 1858 for the Province of Canada. Following the passage of the Currency Act on August 1, 1854, the Province introduced a decimal currency system. To accommodate transactions involving the Nova Scotian pound, a twenty-cent coin was issued—equal in value to a Nova Scotian shilling. However, no shilling coin had ever been minted in Nova Scotia, and the new coin was often mistaken for both the British shilling and the American quarter. Due to this confusion, the twenty-cent coin was discontinued after 1858. The coins were withdrawn from circulation and, from 1885 on, returned to the Royal Mint to be recoined as 25-cent coins.
