German Planchet: 10 million preassembled planchets with the same specifications were purchased from a German supplier, Deutsche Nickel, in order to meet the deadline for the new Twoonie to be issued. Identification of the two planchet varieties is difficult, and can be accomplished with practice. The identification of planchet varieties in circulated coins is even more difficult. The two dollar coin struck from a Canadian planchet has a shiny, polished finish that some collectors describe as "oily". The two dollar coin struck from a German planchet has a dull, matte-like finish, with lines similar to the bullion finish across the ring.
