This issue is considered a Wartime Silver Alloy Nickel composed of copper, silver, and manganese. This change in metal was introduced to eliminate the use of nickel temporarily, as it was critical war material. This was also the first year the P Mint mark, representing Philadelphia, was minted on the coin.
Obverse: The portrait of third president of the United States Thomas Jefferson, facing left, with the date to the right and legend around.
Reverse: Artist's representation of Monticello, Jefferson's home in Charlottesville, Virginia, with the denomination below, and the legend around.
