1901 O USA Dime Good (G-4)

The United States dime has been a part of American coinage since the earliest days of the nation. Authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792, the first dimes were struck in 1796 and were made of silver, following the decimal-based monetary system established for the new United States. Early examples featured the Draped Bust design, followed by the Capped Bust, Liberty Seated and Barber designs as the denomination evolved. In 1916, the dime received one of its most recognizable designs with Adolph A. Weinman’s Winged Liberty Head, commonly known as the “Mercury” dime, which remained in production until 1945.

In 1946, the dime was redesigned to honour President Franklin D. Roosevelt, following his death in 1945. The Roosevelt dime has remained in production ever since, originally struck in silver until 1964 and subsequently produced in copper-nickel. Although small in size, the dime has played an important role in American commerce for more than two centuries, and its many designs and dates make it a popular collecting area.
