1876 USA Half Dollar Very Fine (VF-20)
The United States half dollar has a long and fascinating history, dating back to the earliest years of the nation. Authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792, the denomination was among the first silver coins produced by the newly established United States Mint. The first half dollars were struck in 1794 and featured the Flowing Hair design by Chief Engraver Robert Scot, with Liberty appearing on the obverse and a small eagle on the reverse. In 1796, the design was changed to the Draped Bust type, featuring a more mature portrait of Liberty and an eagle surrounded by a wreath. These early half dollars were substantial silver coins and were well suited to larger commercial transactions in the young American economy.
Obverse: Liberty seated and looking over her right shoulder, holding a stick with a Phrygian cap on top in her left hand, a shield resting on her right, with thirteen stars representing the original thirteen states around, and the date below.
Reverse: An American eagle with wings spread and a shield on its breast, holding a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons, with a banner bearing the motto above, the denomination below, and the country name around.
