1803 Small Date Large Fraction USA Cent F-VF (F-15)
The 1803 Small Date Large Fraction USA Cent is a copper coin with the Draped Bust design introduced in 1796 and created by Chief Engraver Robert Scot, replacing the previous liberty cap design. The small date does not have the extra notch on the tip of the "3" pointing upwards, and the "1" does not have a notch, as opposed to the large date variety. The large 1/100 fraction at the bottom of the reverse has much larger numbers and two large notches at the tips of the "1"s, whereas the small fraction has very little or no notches on the tips of the "1"s. The coin was issued during the Louisiana Purchase, where the United States purchased the territory of Louisiana from the French First Republic, for fifteen million dollars or approximately eighteen dollars per square mile.
