1802 USA 1 Cent Very Good (VG-8)

The Draped Bust United States one cent, struck from 1796 to 1807, is one of the most recognizable early American large cents and an important part of the formative years of the United States Mint. Designed by Chief Engraver Robert Scot, the obverse features a portrait of Liberty with flowing hair, a ribbon tied behind her head, and drapery around her neckline. The reverse features ONE CENT within an open wreath of olive branches, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the denomination expressed as 1/100 beneath the wreath. The coins were struck in copper, measured roughly 29 mm in diameter, and were substantially larger than the modern American cent. The design was introduced in 1796 as a replacement for the Liberty Cap cent and proved considerably more successful, remaining in production for twelve years. More than 16 million Draped Bust cents were produced during the series, but relatively few survive in high grades today, making attractive examples especially desirable to collectors of early American copper. The design was ultimately replaced in 1808 by John Reich's Classic Head cent.
