Two obverse varieties, known as No Shoulder Fold (or Strap) and Shoulder Fold (or Strap) saw use during 1953. One can better observe the differences by nothing the flared ends of the letters of the No Shoulder Fold, or the less flared ends of the letters on the Shoulder Fold.
Obverse: Laureate bust of Elizabeth II at 27 years old facing right, with the legend around.
Reverse: The celebrated schooner from Nova Scotia, the Bluenose, sailing to the left, with the date to the right, the country name above, and denomination below.
