A Timeless Gift: 2018 3D Lenticular Snowball Fight Coin

For many years, Colonial Acres Coins has offered an outstanding selection of beautiful lenticular coins. What exactly is this type of coin, and why do people want to own them? Dive into the wonderful world of lenticular coins and learn about some of the best Christmas coins for the holiday season.

Understanding Lenticular Printing

Lenticular printing is a technologically advanced process that creates an alternating image by splicing at least two images together. The images are sliced into strips that are either bonded to a plastic or printed on paper. Note the difference between "slicing" and "splicing." "Sliced" images are "spliced" together when they are interlaced onto the printed surface.

The spliced images are backed with an array of lenses that refract light in different ways when you look at the lenticular surface from different angles, causing the images to appear to shift from one to the other as you move the object around. While most lenticular images you have probably seen are printed on plastic or paper, the Royal Canadian Mint has recently mastered the process of printing lenticular images on metal coins, which has led to the release of some breathtaking new collectibles.

The 2018 3D Snowball Fight Coin

Nothing says "Christmas coins" like a coin with a snowball fight on it. Now that you understand how lenticular printing works, you can truly appreciate the dedication, artistry, and pure technological genius that goes into making one of these amazing pieces. The art on this 2018 coin was designed by Tony Bianco. It features children dressed in vibrant primary colours playfully hiding behind a snow fort, in the company of a dog. You can even see that the hard-packed bricks of snow used to make the fort were scooped up with a bright red shovel.

When you tilt the coin, things suddenly get more exciting. The children burst into action, launching their sneakily made snowballs directly at you, the viewer. When you tilt this coin, you can almost feel the cold, packed snow pelting you square in the face. Almost is the key — for you can enjoy the nostalgic and fun-filled energy of a snowball fight with no mess and no effort, right from the comfort of your home. An added touch of humour in this image is that the kids' sudden movement makes the dog jump and dash out of the fort.

When you were a kid, you would have thought we were crazy if we told you that you could enjoy a snowball fight while sitting next to the fire in your cozy living room. Now lenticular printing technology has turned a dream into reality, creating a masterpiece of art on a unique collectible coin that lets you relive the innocence of your childhood again and again.

Other Lenticular Coins

If you can't get enough of this lenticular delight, we have many more options from the Royal Canadian Mint. One of our favourites is the 2012 Santa's Magical Visit 50-cent Lenticular Coin. This coin features a traditionally dressed Santa Claus just arriving through the fireplace. He raises his finger in a "sshhh" so you don't ruin the Christmas surprise. As you tilt the coin, you can see he is unloading a wonderful array of presents, tucking them smartly away beneath the tree. Perhaps there are some collectible Christmas coins in his gift bag?
