Great Britain 1679 Charles II Gold Guinea G-VG (G6)

The Commonwealth of England (1649–1660) was the republican government that ruled England, Scotland, and Ireland following the English Civil War and the execution of King Charles I. Established by the Rump Parliament, the Commonwealth abolished the monarchy and the House of Lords, declaring England a republic under parliamentary rule. Oliver Cromwell, a leading figure in the Parliamentarian forces, eventually took control as Lord Protector in 1653, marking the period known as the Protectorate. Cromwell's government enforced strict Puritan moral codes and expanded England’s influence abroad but faced challenges with internal dissent and financial struggles. Following Cromwell's death in 1658 and political instability under his son Richard, the Commonwealth collapsed, leading to the Restoration of the monarchy under Charles II in 1660.

Obverse: Fourth laureate bust of Charles II facing right, with the legend around.
Reverse: Crowned cruciform shields around interlocking C's with sceptres bearing the national emblems in the angles, with the date divided above, and the legend around.
