Italy 1993R Horatius 500 Lire Choice Brilliant Uncirculated (MS64)
This coin was issued to commemorate the 2000th Anniversary of the Death of Horatius. Quintus Horatius Flaccus, better known as Horace (65–8 BC), was one of ancient Rome’s greatest lyric poets, celebrated for his wit, wisdom, and refined style. Living during the reign of Emperor Augustus, he wrote Odes, Satires, and Epistles, blending personal reflection with sharp social commentary. Horace famously promoted the ideals of moderation and balance, including the enduring phrase carpe diem (“seize the day”). His poetry influenced European literature for centuries and remains admired for its elegance, humor, and philosophical depth.
Obverse: A portrait of Horatius facing left, two feathers - one larger than the other - on either side of his head, with his name divided around, and the engraver's name along the rim, near the shoulder.
Reverse: A Corinthian capital, the symbol of classicism, with an incused verse taken from Ars Poetica and the denomination on the right, the mint mark and date at left, with the country name around.
