Ekaterina II, better known as Catherine the Great (1729–1796), was Empress of Russia from 1762 until her death and is remembered as one of the most powerful and enlightened rulers of her age. A German princess by birth, she came to power after the overthrow of her husband, Peter III, and went on to modernize Russia through administrative reforms, the promotion of education, and support for the arts and Enlightenment ideals. At the same time, she expanded Russian territory dramatically, securing access to the Black Sea and strengthening Russia’s position as a major European power. Though she ruled as an absolute monarch, her reign combined cultural brilliance with political pragmatism, leaving a lasting legacy as Russia’s longest-reigning female sovereign.
