Italy 1993R Carlo Goldoni 500 Lire Choice Brilliant Uncirculated (MS64)
Issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the death of Carlo Goldoni. Carlo Goldoni (1707–1793) was an Italian playwright and librettist, celebrated as one of the key figures who reformed Italian theatre in the 18th century. Moving away from the improvisational style of commedia dell’arte, he introduced more natural dialogue, realistic characters, and plots drawn from everyday life, making his plays accessible and relatable to broader audiences. His works, such as The Servant of Two Masters and The Mistress of the Inn, remain classics of European theatre. Later in life, Goldoni moved to Paris, where he continued writing and teaching, leaving a lasting legacy as a pioneer of modern Italian comedy.
Obverse: A portrait of Carlo Goldini taken from a work of the famous Italian engraver, Marco Pitteri, with his name above the left shoulder, and the country name on the left.
Reverse: At left, a figure dressed in costume and a Harlequin mask bowing to the public; on the right, in the background, the perspective of a Venetian theater at the time of Goldoni's life, with elements of Venice, the denomination in the foreground, with the dates of the anniversary below, and the mint mark to the left of the costumed figure.
