Portuguese-India 1904 Rupia AU-UNC (AU55)

Portuguese India was a collection of coastal territories in the Indian subcontinent under Portuguese control from the early 16th century until 1961. Centered on Goa, which became the capital in 1510, Portuguese India also included Daman, Diu, and smaller enclaves. These settlements served as vital hubs in Portugal’s vast maritime empire, facilitating trade in spices, textiles, and other goods while also acting as centers for missionary activity. Though their power waned with the rise of Dutch and British dominance in the region, the Portuguese retained their Indian possessions for centuries, leaving behind a lasting cultural and architectural legacy that remains visible in Goa today.
