German States 1714 Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover 24 Mariengroschen Extra Fine (EF40)
In the 18th century, Brunswick-Lüneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, often simply called Hanover, rose to international prominence through its union with the British crown. In 1714, Elector George Louis of Hanover became King George I of Great Britain, beginning the Hanoverian dynasty that would rule Britain for over a century. While the electorate itself remained a relatively small German state within the Holy Roman Empire, this dynastic connection gave it outsized influence in European politics. Hanover’s rulers balanced their German responsibilities with their British throne, often drawing the state into wider continental conflicts such as the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years’ War. Despite its modest size, Hanover’s unique position at the crossroads of German and British affairs made it a key player in 18th-century Europe.
