Ancient Persian Empire 450-330BC Silver Siglos VF-EF (VF-30)

The silver siglos was a coin used in the Achaemenid Persian Empire from around 450 to 330 BCE, during the time of Artaxerses I Longimanus and his successors. Made of silver, it served as a standard unit of currency throughout the vast empire, which stretched from Egypt to India. The coin's design typically featured a depiction of the Persian king in a kneeling stance, holding a bow and an akinakès (a type of dagger), symbolizing his role as both a warrior and protector of the empire. The siglos was widely circulated and used in trade across diverse regions, helping unify the empire’s economy. This coin reflects both the military prowess and administrative sophistication of the Achaemenid Persians, who used standardized currency to facilitate commerce and maintain control across their territories.

Obverse: A crowned king facing right, and running with the akinakès in his right hand, and a bow in his left.
Reverse: An incuse punch.
