Nicholas II of Russia was the final ruler of the Russian Empire, reigning from 1894 until his abdication during the Russian Revolution of 1917. Although personally devoted to his family and deeply committed to his role as emperor, Nicholas struggled to adapt to the political and social changes sweeping Russia. His reign was marked by industrial unrest, political repression, the disastrous Russo-Japanese War, and the immense hardships of World War I. By 1917, military defeats, economic collapse, and widespread dissatisfaction forced him to abdicate, ending more than three centuries of Romanov rule.
After his abdication, Nicholas, his wife Alexandra Feodorovna, their five children, and several loyal attendants were held under house arrest. During the ensuing Russian Civil War, the Bolshevik government became increasingly concerned that advancing anti-Bolshevik "White" forces might rescue the imperial family and use them as a rallying symbol against the revolution. As White armies approached the city of Yekaterinburg in July 1918, local Bolshevik authorities decided to eliminate that possibility. In the early hours of 17 July 1918, Nicholas, Alexandra, their children, and their attendants were executed in the basement of the Ipatiev House. The killings were motivated primarily by political concerns: the Bolsheviks believed that leaving any member of the Romanov family alive could provide a focal point for monarchist resistance and threaten the survival of the new Soviet regime. The execution of the Romanovs became one of the most infamous events of the Russian Revolution and symbolized the violent end of Imperial Russia.
