Russia 1723 5 Kopeks F-VF (F-15)
The Russia 1723 5 Kopeks was struck during the reign of Tsar Peter I (Peter the Great), who transformed Russia from a backward Tsardom into a modern European-style empire. As part of his sweeping reforms, Peter sought a standardized and reliable coinage to support commerce, taxation, and the expanding needs of his empire. The 1723 5 Kopeks were a new denomination introduced to replace smaller, less successful copper coins, 0particularly the ¼ Kopek, which were of poor quality and widely counterfeited. Although Russian minting was not yet as technologically advanced as some Western European mints, the dies used for the 1723 5 Kopeks were professionally engraved, and the striking process was far more standardized than previous low-quality issues. Its large size, intricate design, and features such as medallic alignment were deliberately sophisticated, serving as effective safeguards against the rudimentary hand-made counterfeiting methods that were common at the time.
