1942 Dominion of Canada $5 War Savings Certificate
1940: World War II was raging and the government needed to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for the war effort. To do this, the Department of Finance began issuing War Savings Certificates; in essence, low-risk investments that would increase in value by 25% over the next seven-and-a-half years. Canadians would buy in, receiving War Savings Certificates. Their money would go to the war effort and, at the end of the maturation period, they could trade the certificates back for cash plus 25%. Not only a good investment, purchasing War Savings Certificates was also seen as a patriotic duty.
This War Savings Certificate was issued for $5 on December 15, 1942. It is in good condition, showing some minor yellowing and creases. The name of the original recipient is visible on the front.
