Italy 1975 500 Lire Michelangelo 500th Birthday Commemorative Coin in Presentation Folder (Issues)
Broadly considered to be one of the titans of art history, Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti (1475-1564) cut his teeth at the height and heart of the Italian Renaissance, becoming an apprentice fresco painter in Florence at the age of just 13. Naturally talented, his work drew the eye of Lorenzo de Medici, head of Florence's most powerful and wealthy family and generous patron of the arts. Lorenzo's private collection exposed young Michelangelo to the balanced humanism of Greek and Roman art. The effect that these ancient works had on Michelangelo was immense; it can be seen in the supple, flexing musculature and elegant, emotional posing of the figures in his many famous works, including the Pietà, The Creation of Adam, and David. His skill was so great that he became a living legend in his own time, his works sought after by French kings and Ottoman sultans, and his influence cast a long shadow over the Mannerist and Baroque styles that would follow the Renaissance. Today, his name continues to loom large; even those with only a passing familiarity with Italian history have probably heard of Michelangelo.
In 1975, art enthusiasts worldwide celebrated Michelangelo's 500th birthday. To commemorate the occasion, the Italian Ministry of the Treasury released this elegant 500 lire coin. Made from .835 silver, the coin features a left-facing bust of Michelangelo, apparently based on the c.1564 bust by Daniele da Volterra. The reverse displays the Delphic Sibyl, one of the many frescoes Michelangelo painted on the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
This coin is safely held in a presentation folder, which doubles as a COA (Italian language only). Please note that, given its age, the folder and coin are in good shape; but, the folder does show some minor wear and the coin has toned quite dramatically.
