1992 Christopher Columbus Commemorative Discovery Two-Coin & Stamp Set (Includes 1oz. .999 Silver Coin)
In 1492, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain in search of a new route to Asia. Instead, he arrived in the Bahamas, opening the floodgates for European expansion into the Americas. In 1992, this monumental historical event — for better or worse — marked its 500th anniversary, and a number of commemorative coins were released. This set contains two such coins. The first, made from one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, depicts Columbus' flagship, the Santa Maria on the reverse, and a haloed Columbus with flag raised high on the obverse. The text reads, "The voyage that changed the world" and "Discovery of the New World." The second is a medallion depicting Columbus' first encounter with the American native population, on October 12, 1492. A bust of Columbus decorates the obverse. Also included is a commemorative 1892 2-cent stamp, reproducing John Vanderlyn's painting, The Landing of Columbus.
Please note, the set is in generally excellent condition, but due to its age the packaging has yellowed somewhat. There may be some minor scuffs, scratches and marks.
