1983 Stratford, Ontario Industry and Arts Locomotive Fine Silver Trade Dollar in Case (Impaired) No Tax
The 1983 Stratford, Ontario Industry and Arts Locomotive Silver Trade Dollar was struck to commemorate Stratford’s rich locomotive history. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Stratford emerged as a major railway hub. In 1873, the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR)—which was later absorbed into Canadian National Railway (CN) due to bankruptcy—established extensive locomotive repair shops in the city. These shops were capable of housing and servicing up to 22 locomotives at once and were among the largest industrial buildings in Canada at the time, showcasing state-of-the-art ironwork and engineering. Their presence transformed Stratford into a bustling railway center, significantly boosting its economic growth and contributing to its incorporation as a city.
