Montreal Temperance Society Medallion, Undated, Extra Fine (EF-40) Holed as Typical. While outlandish to modern sensibilities, temperance (abstinence from alcohol) was once an extremely significant religious, social and political movement, as alcohol consumption was seen as (or was) a cause of immense damage to families and society. This medallion reads in Latin, "In this sign conquer," from the vision of the cross Constantine the Great claimed to have received prior to the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, and in French, "Be faithful unto death," "And your soul will be pierced by a sword," and, "For the love of Jesus crucified I will be always faithful to the commitment I made in the Temperance Society."
