1976 Dominican Republic 6-Coin Juan Pablo Duarte Centennial Proof Set in Case
Revolutionary, folk hero, and Founding Father, Juan Pablo Duarte (1813-1876) was born in Santo Domingo on the Spanish side of Hispaniola. By the time he came of age, the Spanish had been ousted, and the island had been annexed by Haiti, which sought to keep Hispaniola out of European hands. Unwilling to be subjugated, Duarte and a handful of other young men founded a secret revolutionary group called La Trinitaria, which sought to undermine Haitian power and plant the seed of liberation in the minds of the people. After many struggles, Duarte and his followers succeeded, and the Dominican Republic proclaimed its independence in 1844.
In 1976, the Dominican Republic produced this series of proof coins to celebrate the centennial of Duarte's death. Each coin features a facing bust of the Founding Father, and all six are contained in an elegant, navy case for safe display and storage. Included are one peso, half peso, 25 centavos, 10 centavos, 5 centavos, and 1 centavo coins.
Please note that, due to its age, the case shows some light wear and tear and the silver coins have some light toning.
