2022 Niue $2 Women in History: Boudicca 1oz. Fine Silver Coin (No Tax) scuffed capsule

When the Romans conquered Britain in 43 AD, Prasutagus, king of the Celtic tribe of the Iceni, surrendered in exchange for nominal independence. His tribe lived peacefully in what is now Norfolk -- the northeast corner of Roman Britain -- for just over a decade, paying tribute but otherwise living in peace and prosperity. Then, Prasutagus died.

His wish was for his fortune to be split in two: part to his two daughters, and part to Nero, emperor of Rome, in hopes that this gesture would inspire continued peace. Instead, with their client king dead, the Romans moved in, annexed the land, plundered the tribesmen, raped Prasutagus' daughters, and flogged their mother. The mother was Boudicca, and Rome had just made a deadly mistake.

A tall and powerful woman who spoke harshly, wore her flaming red hair long and loose, and stood at the head of an army of furious, vengeful barbarians; it was like Boudicca had been plucked, perfectly formed, from Roman nightmares. Gathering an alliance of Celtic warriors, she went steamrolling across Britain, leaving devastation in her wake. Upwards of seventy thousand Romans -- and sympathetic Britons -- were massacred. Londinium burned. The entire Ninth Legion was sliced to ribbons in a single devastating ambush. Driven by pure rage, Boudicca had no interest in taking prisoners; her army left every Roman and Roman sympathizer they came across dead on gibbets, crosses, or impalement spikes. Even when Rome did finally manage to rally and smother her rebellion, they could not have Boudicca. The Iceni queen took poison rather than fall into their hands.

Boudicca's story is one of revenge, justice, and fierce colonial resistance. She is remembered even today as a heroine of British history and has been inspiring British art and storytelling for nearly two thousand years. The Women in History collection from the New Zealand Mint honours Boudicca as part of their lineup, with this beautiful 99.99% fine silver round featuring a colourized portrait of the queen on the reverse. She wears the blue war paint that, according to Caesar and Pliny, was favoured by Celtic warriors, and stands at the head of her army. This beautiful coin is a perfect collector's piece for any history enthusiast.

Please note, there are some very light scuffs on the capsule.
