From PAMP, the Heritage Sports series celebrates the history of some of the world's most popular sports. Each set contains two half-ounce coins, composed of .999 fine silver, shaped like the equipment associated with that sport. A truly unique collection for any sports fan!
Throwing a ball and then hitting it with a stick is one of those things humans have been doing for as long as we've lived together, which makes tracing the precise history of baseball challenging. There are artistic depictions of games that look teasingly similar dating to the Middle Ages, but the earliest reference to "Base-Ball" specifically is found in an English children's book dated 1744. Titled A Little Pretty Pocket-Book by John Newberry, the book includes a woodcut of three boys, one holding a ball, and the following poem: "The ball once struck off / Away flies the Boy / To the next destin'd Post / And then Home with Joy." Sounds similar to modern baseball, but the woodcut seems to involve hitting the ball with your hand (ouch!) rather than a bat. All the pieces of what we think of as baseball -- ball, bat, base-running, diamond -- don't start to come together until the early 19th century, when the narrative splits. British sources will stress that baseball develops from other popular British games: cricket, wicket, rounders, feeder, and others. American sources, however, will tell you that baseball followed a unique evolutionary path in the colonies, making it more of a cousin than a descendant of these other games. Either way, the first set of true-blue baseball rules was enshrined in New York by 1845, and the rest is history.
