Since 1967, Greece had been ruled by a group of middle-ranking right-wing colonels called the military junta, under the leadership of Georgios Papadopoulos. In 1973, after a failed royalist military coup, Papadopoulos officially abolished the monarchy -- which was, in fact, in exile in Italy -- and established the Third Hellenic Republic.
This mint set dates to 1976 and showcases the coins of the Republic: 10 lepta, 20 lepta, 50 lepta, 1 drachma, 2 drachmae, 5 drachmae, 10 drachmae, and 20 drachmae. Please note, the set has experienced some wear and yellowing.
