Widely hailed as the most magnificent ship ever built, Titanic left Southampton on Wednesday, April 10th, 1912, bound for New York. At 11:40 pm on April 14th, she struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic just over 640 kilometres from Newfoundland. Just under three hours later, Titanic had sunk, taking about 1,500 souls with her. It was an unprecedented tragedy, and it has captured the imaginations of millions ever since. Her magnificent grandeur, contrasted with her humbling end, has inspired artists, writers, and filmmakers for generations.
