Singapore 1975 $10 10th Anniversary of Independence .500 Silver Coin in Case (light wear)
In 1819, the British East India Company established a trading post in Singapore. Within five years, control of the island had shifted from the Dutch-controlled state of Johor to the British Empire, which folded it first into the Straits Settlements, and then into British India. Singapore remained a British naval base and trading centre until 1963 -- with the brief but important exception of its seizure by Japan during the devastating 1942 Battle of Singapore -- when it separated from Britain to join the Federation of Malaysia. A period of intense political and racial strife followed, culminating in Singapore's ejection from Malaysia. Suddenly, in 1965, Singapore found itself a newly independent country.
This 50% silver coin celebrates the tenth anniversary of Singapore's independence. The country's long maritime history is front and centre on the coin's reverse, with a detailed engraving of a freighter berthed by a wharf. The obverse displays Singapore's Coat of Arms. The coin comes in a wooden case with COA.
Please note, there is some light (but not distracting) wear on the case and capsule.
