2000 St. Albert, AB, $2 Millennium Trade Token
St. Albert was founded by the Métis in 1861. A crossroads for First Nations peoples and Catholic missionaries, it soon became the site of two Indian residential schools, a legacy the suburban city continues to wrestle with. In 2000, communities across Alberta celebrated the turn of the millennium by minting these square trade tokens. St. Albert's token dubs it "Alberta's Oldest Community" -- a claim it shares with Fort Vermilion and Fort Chipewyan in the province's far north.
