In European history, the Age of Sail spanned roughly the 15th through the 19th centuries, and was defined by the dominance of sailing ships in trade and war. Enabled by advancements in navigation, steam power technology, and the development of naval artillery, the Age of Sail brought the world closer together, but also increased the scope of global war and colonial exploitation.
