1996 Canada Piedfort Two Dollar Proof Sterling Silver Coin in Case (light wear)

Piedfort coins are unusually thick -- usually, twice the thickness and weight of a normal coin. Originating in France in the 12th century, piedforts were probably originally produced as guides for engravers, but they soon became prestigious collector's items amongst royals, nobility, and dignitaries. This is the historical beginning of coin collecting as a hobby, and the primary reason for its designation as "the hobby of kings."

The 1996 $2 piedfort -- which is twice the width of a regular toonie -- was the first such coin to be issued by the Royal Canadian Mint. Made of sterling silver, the core of this frosted cameo proof is plated in 24-karat gold. The coin comes in its original Mint packaging with an informational sheet.
