Portugal 1960 500th Anniversary of Prince Henry the Navigator 3-Coin Set (issues)
Born in 1394, Prince Henry was King John I's third son and, therefore, the spare to the spare to the heir. This put him in a position to do more-or-less whatever he pleased, and so he became one of the pioneers of the Age of Sail. Using his newly designed caravel sailing ship, which was faster and more agile than any vessel that had come before, Henry bounced farther down the coast of Western Africa than any European had been in 500 years. Henry also sponsored voyages, collecting 20% of the profits (which was typical for the time) in exchange for funding and ships. When he died in 1460, Henry had established the beginnings of what would become the Portuguese Empire, which, at its height, would span its influence from Brazil to Japan.
Today, Henry's legacy is quite mixed. He and his captains established new trade routes, mapped coasts and developed sailing technology. But Henry also viciously exploited Africa, with his captains carting away gold, goods, and the first African slaves destined for Europe. This set of three coins, produced in 1960, marks 500 years since Henry's death and includes a 5, 10, and 20 Escudos coin -- all featuring portraits of Henry. Each coin contains silver: .800 (20 Escudos), .680 (10 Escudos), and .650 (5 Escudos).
Please note, the coins exhibit some toning and the folder shows light wear and tear.
