King of Spain from 1788 to 1808, Charles IV (1748-1819) had a turbulent reign. He was passive and ineffectual by nature, which led to the rise of corrupt and scandalous First Minister Manuel de Godoy. Threatened by Revolutionary France, Napoleon, and an internal coup in quick succession, Charles lost the throne and spent the rest of his life in exile. Napoleon placed his brother, Joseph Bonaparte, on the Spanish throne in his place.
