Italy 1914 R Victor Emmanuel III 2 Lire Extra Fine (EF40) Cleaned or impaired
Victor Emmanuel III was the last king of Italy, and for good reason. His natural disposition was a terrible combination of weak and stubborn, and so, when Benito Mussolini came knocking in 1922, he both refused to listen to parliament and so feared a civil war that he capitulated immediately. What followed was twenty years of fascist dictatorship, with Mussolini propped up and kept in power by Victor Emmanuel. He did not remove Mussolini until 1943, when the regime was failing anyway. When the king fled to Naples, abandoning Rome to fall to the Germans at the tail end of World War II, Victor Emmanuel refused to work with anyone: not with the Allies, the Italian government (in exile), or the Italian Resistance. His stubbornness tanked the royal family's reputation, and he was soon forced to abdicate.
