Great Britain 1625-1642 Charles I Shilling Very Good (VG8) Scratched, marks, or impaired

Charles was, shall we say, traditional. He believed in the literal divine right of kings -- that he was appointed by God, and that no mortal was above him. Predictably, he was not the sort of person to compromise. He fought with Parliament over everything: how much power the king should have, what decisions Charles could make without Parliament's say, how much money should be raised, and how much religious ceremony should be involved in government. Eventually, this bubbled over into the English Civil Wars (1642-1651), which ended in Charles' defeat. The king was tried for treason, found guilty, and beheaded in 1649. England was proclaimed a republic. Of course, England's royal family still exists; they were reinstated with Charles II in 1660, though they wielded much, much less power than they once did.
