Ethiopia 1969 50 Santeem (DOD)
1969 saw the growth of socialist movements in Ethiopia, which was then ruled by Emperor Haile Selassie. Students at the Haile Selassie I University began arguing for the equality of ethnic and tribal groups within the country on a Marxist framework. Selassie (correctly) saw them as a threat and would eventually be overthrown in a 1974 coup supported by the Soviet Union.
