Austria 1681 Max Gandolph von Kuenburg 3 Kreuzer (DOD)
Max Gandolph (sometimes spelt Gandalf) was Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg from 1668 to 1687. His claim to infamy is the spearheading of a major persecution of "witches" now known as the Zaubererjackl Trials. The trials, some of the worst in Austria's history, saw more than 130 people -- mostly children -- put to death. The children (who were, unusually for accused witches, mostly boys) were rumoured to be the followers of a dark magician called the Jackal, who taught them black magic and led them in Satanic sabbaths. Unsurprisingly, the Jackal himself never materialized. Max Gandolph died in 1687, three years before the end of the Zaubererjackl Trials, and today rests in the crypt of Salzburg Cathedral.
