1984 Gold-Plated Canada Jacques Cartier Dollar
Throughout the 1530s and 1540s, French explorer Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) mapped the Canadian coast and the St. Lawrence River. Though he was searching for a sea route to Asia, his work paved the way for later French colonisation. Cartier was the first European to use the name Canada, derived from the Huron-Iroquois kanata meaning village, to refer to the area around what is now Quebec City.
This gold-plated 1984 coin celebrates 450 years since Cartier's initial arrival in 1534.
