Named after Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley, lord of Preston and the 16th earl of Derby, he served in Canada's House of commons from 1865. He was later on named governor general of the country in 1888 and he became an ice hockey fan in 1889 after watching a game at the Montreal Winter Carnival. The Stanley Cup was first presented during the 1892-1893 season to the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association team by Lord Stanley.
