Thought to be the earliest relatives of modern mammals, platypuses are truly prehistoric looking animals, with a water-repellant furry body ending in a duck bill that scoops up worms, insects, and their larvae at the bottoms of lakes and rivers. Though they may be small in size, these mighty mammals pack a dastardly punch in the form of excruciating (though non-lethal to humans) venom in the hollow spurs on their flippers. The venom from a platypus has been compared hundreds of hornet stings, leaving victims unable to use the impacted area for weeks. Ouch!

This coin's reverse features a duck-billed platypus playfully sticking its head out of the water, with a decorative wreath of water lilies surrounding it.
